Medical Spanish is geared towards advanced students of Medicine or doctors with previous knowledge of the
Spanish Language who have reached at least an Intermediate level.
Recommended modality : 2 weeks of Intensive Spanish program (40 Group classes and 20 one-to-one classes);
2 weeks of shadowing in a hospital
Purposes of the course
This program offers to the students the opportunities of:
Acting as speakers, listeners, readers and writers being able to perform in different communicative contexts
with colleagues and patients
Getting in touch with the sanitary problems in our country.
Performing in real communicative contexts through a shadowing in a hospital.

SPEAKING AND LISTENING
Perform interviews
Answer questions in an interviewing situation.
Tell experiences
Expose in front of an audience.
Listen to stories and expositions
Give and interpret instructions.
PRACTICE OF READING
Localize specific information.
Identify arguments that express some author’s opinion
Monitor the global comprehension process, distinguishing what is comprehended and what isn’t
Commentwith others the collected information
Compare different interpretations
Make relationships between different parts of text using link words and punctuation properly
Make relationships between the given information and previous knowledge about the subject
PRACTISE OF WRITTING
Write formal letters or e-mails to introduce himself, request information, complain or answer to
complains, informs and instructions. In order to do that student will have to:
consider the address,
adjust the written production to the pattern,
revise the text while writing; consult to other readers during the process of writing and in the final revision,
revise the spelling using the spelling corrector, the dictionary or other written sources.
Reflection about the language
Use the Spanish monolingual dictionary.
Building words: suffixes and prefixes
Derivation of words: lexical relativity
Learning activities
During the classes, the contents will develop working with materialspecially designed for the Medical
Spanish course. Students will do:
role-plays of interviews, instructions and explanations to patients
reading of expositive texts relatives with health regional problems and pathologies about which consults
appear in emergency guards pre surgicalfiles or clinical histories
brief expositions about study subjects
reflection activities about language
