Host Families
We highly recommend that students take advantage of home stays in order to practice what they learn in class – key to language learning! It is also the best way to learn about the local culture, food, and people. For these reasons, the majority of our students stay with one of our excellent host families.
Host family accommodation at our partner school in Chile includes the following:
- Two meals per day, breakfast and dinner
- Private room (unless otherwise requested)
- Shared bathroom
Depending on the location of the program, students may have the option of being assigned to a host family with several other students, or as the only student.
Host Family Profile:
- All families are carefully screened and must meet the school's requirements before being accepted as a
host family.
- All of our host families are middle-class by Chilean standards and live in homes and areas that are typical of Santiago.
- Many of our families have been in our program for many years and have consistently received excellent student evaluations.
- Most of the families are individuals who live alone. (They usually have adult children who live elsewhere, but visit often.)
- Having young children in the host families is not common in Chile.
- Non-smoking host families are available.
- Distances from the schools vary, but are usually about 20 – 60 minutes by bus or metro.
- Students are given a key to the house and are free to come and go as they please, but need to respect the routine of the family they are staying with.
Shared Apartment
Shared apartment lodging consists of living with two to five other people in a fully furnished apartment or flat. In some cases, students may share the apartment with local residents or students. Students of different nationalities are normally placed together so that they may make international friends and practice the language they are learning. They will have their own bedroom and share common areas of the apartment, such as the kitchen, bathroom(s), living room, laundry, and study areas. Cleaning of the common areas is included, but meals are not included.
Alternative Accommodations
If a student does not wish to stay with a host family, he/she can opt for one of the following lodging choices. The student will pay for the housing directly to the hotel, apartment agency, or hostel.
Hotels and Hostels
There are many hotels and hostels available in Santiago. They range greatly in price and amenities.
Please ask to see our Alternative Accommodations listings.
Apartments
Apartments are very popular with students who wish to be independent or who are looking for luxuries normally not found in a home stay. They normally include a bedroom, living room, bathroom, and kitchen facilities, and usually end up being cheaper than hotels. Discounted rates are normally given for monthly stays.
