Spanish in Barcelona

With a lot to see and do in the city, it's hardly surprising that Barcelona is one of the most popular destinations in Spain for people wanting to learn Spanish!

Barcelona is one of the most important cities in Spain, cosmopolitan and multi-cultural capital city of Cataluña. It is one of the most beautiful and exciting cities in the world, and year after year the city welcomes about 3 million visitors.

The city enjoys a perfect mild climate, making it an ideal place to be at any time of the year. As a major tourist destination, Barcelona is easily reached and affordable; from Europe and the rest of the world. Bordering the Mediterranean Sea, it is the perfect location to enjoy delicious cuisine and a relaxing holiday at its sandy pristine beaches, which are less than 15 minutes away from the school!

The city has a huge number of attractions, including a city centre which still maintains its medieval street plan. Among its many attractions are: boulevard Las Ramblas, the most famous street in Europe; Picasso museum, hosting one of the most complete collections from this artist's youth and formative years; Barri Gòtic (Gothic quarter), Barcelona's oldest district and home to numerous Gothic buildings and cathedrals; Magnificent architectural structures designed by famous artist Gaudi (La Sagrada Familia, Casa Milà, Guell Park, among others); the Biosphere Reserve 'Barenas Reales' featuring a "moon" landscape of cliffs and hills of shaped clay soil; and Barcelona's world-famous football club, which also has its very own museum!

Barcelona is almost as lively at night as it is during the day and it has a unique, exciting atmosphere, which provides visitors with a truly unforgettable experience. There are two major arts festivals during the year, one in summer and one in autumn, and there are concerts and shows of different kinds happening all the time.

Barcelona attracts a huge number of foreign students. It combines its obvious attractions as a place of outstanding tourist and cultural interest, a friendly, cosmopolitan population and general atmosphere, and Spanish that is spoken with clarity not to be found in other parts of Spain, making it easy to understand as well as, for learners, to imitate.

As most people now know, there are two official languages in Cataluña: Spanish (or Castilian) and Catalan. Catalan is not a dialect of Spanish; it is a separate language which in many respects is as close to French as it is to Spanish. Will Catalan affect your learning of Spanish in Barcelona? The answer is "no".

At our school, Spanish (not Catalan) is taught to foreign students, and all host families will also speak Spanish (not Catalan) to them. Students may overhear some conversations in Catalan, but being Barcelona as cosmopolitan as it is, they are equally likely to overhear conversations in English, French or Italian.

Barcelona is one of the top destinations in Spain for people wanting to learn Spanish. Though nearly over half of the population also speaks Catalan, everyone in Barcelona will automatically use Spanish to speak to foreign students. Don't be afraid of picking up a Catalan accent if you come to Barcelona to learn Spanish. If you do, congratulate yourself – you've obviously learnt a lot!
